I teach in the autism spectrum classroom at Ingraham where there are eight students and two instructional assistants. What each student does in my classroom varies greatly depending on his or her individual needs. What I strive for is to create an environment where every one of the students in this portable is methodically working everyday on skills that will benefit them in their post-high school life. All of my students work on life skills of some variety, whether that involves time / money or self-care. Also, every student works on social and recreational skills of some kind. I’d like every student who graduates from my program to leave with the vocational skills to start working immediately after high school. Previously while working towards a master’s degree in education, I was fortunate to student teach in the autism program at Roosevelt with Dr. Candice Styer.
Born and raised in the U-District, Peter Johansen graduated from WWU with a degree in English in 2000. Then, after a summer processing fish in Alaska, he moved to Prague where he taught ESL for a year. From there, he moved to Santa Barbara, where he worked as an instructional assistant and first became interested in teaching special needs kids. He then moved back to Seattle in 2003 and worked towards a masters degree in special education at the UW. He still works intermittently at a CD store on Capitol Hill, and also enjoys going to musical performances of all kinds (but especially experimental jazz), documentary films, exploring Seattle by bicycle, learning how to cook, and spending time with his new wife, classical musician (and teacher) Erica Johansen.
